History

Chronology of Soka Education Research Institute

Oct 14, 1994: Plan to establish Soka Education Research Institute is announced by the founder.

The future plan of the newly-established academic and educational facilities is examined, and a plan for establishment of Soka Education Research Institute is also provided. Preparation of establishment under the "Soka Education Research Institute (which was renamed "Soka Education Research Center" later)" plan is launched. This plan is aimed at the realization of "the founder spirits" of Soka University, the research on theory of education by Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, the father of Soka education, and the proposal from the perspective of humanism and human rights.

May 15, 1996: "Soka Education reference room / Committee on data collection" is launched.

This committee is renamed "Committee on data collection of Soka Education" later on, and the following three topics regarding collection and preservation of all kinds of data were discussed:

1. (1)  Reports and records about the founder's educational plan and speech
2. (2)  Collection and preservation of publications written by the founder which are written in Japanese and are translated into other languages
3. (3)  Collection and preservation of resources regarding theory of "Soka Education" by Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and theory of education by Josei Toda

Main works of "Committee on data collection of Soka Education" are following:

1. (1)  To collect publications and resources regarding the founder Ikeda, Makiguchi, and Toda, and to prepare a reading space for researchers from both domestic and overseas countries.
2. (2)  To plan out data collection and display design of exhibition room (the Founder's section and University introduction), which is established in Central Tower Building.
3. (3)  To collect resources for compilation of university history (photographs, stuffs, printed materials, and newspaper articles) and to conduct research on history of Soka University and Soka High Schools for over thirty years and the ideology of founder's Soka education.
4. (4)  To consider future orientation for the concept of "Soka Education Research Institute".

November 16, 2000: "Soka Education Research Center"(an institution attached to university) is established as a memorial project marking the 30th anniversary of the foundation.

April 2, 2006: "Soka Education Research Institute" is established.

History

February 15, 1996	Committee on data collection of Soka Education is launched.
November 18, 1998	Committee on establishment of Soka Education Research Center is launched.
June 21, 2000	Preparatory committee on establishment of Soka Education Research Center is launched.
November 16, 2000	Soka Education Research Center is established.
September 17, 2005	Preparatory Committee on Establishment of Soka Education Research Institute is launched.
April 2, 2006	Soka Education Research Institute is established.
April 2, 2006	The Center for Ikeda Studies is established under Soka Education Research Institute.
April 2, 2007	The Japan branch of the Center for Dewey Studies is established under Soka Education Research Institute.
